A Japanese Noh Play
NYU Undergrad Theatre
Director: [director]
Lighting Designer: [lighting designer]
Set Designer: [set designer]
Costume Designer: [costume designer]
This show was a challenge for two reasons. First, it was a once act play which was part of an evening of one acts
plays. Therefore the set had to be able to be assembled and disassembled quickly. Similarly, the lighting had to
be versatile enough to work on multiple sets. The second challenge was to create the multiple environments which
the play required, within the single set, through the lighting.
As the lighting designer for the entire evening of one act plays, I decided the best way to accomplish this was
through the use of color. Dominant and recessive colors were used to define different environments. This was
extremely effective, requiring only a color change between the shows.
LPS helped to keep everything in order through out the entire process. First the repertory show concept,
which is the basis for LPS, made it very easy to switch from one play to the next. The lightplot was entered
once, and then each lighting instrument could be assigned a purpose for each play. After that all the show
change sheets were very easily and quickly generated. This saved untold amounts of time with everything from
patching, to focusing, to tech and dress rehearsing the plays.
Additionally, the Instrument and Template Wizards present within LPS helped enormously with the actual design
process. Instead of having to constantly reference a catalog or other applications, everything was right there
in one easily accessible place.
The show was a great success, and using LPS definitely saved time and money by allowing everyone access to just
the pieces of information they needed at the moment they needed it.
